Contemplation Ambivalent about change: “Sitting on the fence” Not considering change within the next month. Friends may start to tell you they feel there is an issue. May have recently had some negative consequences from behavior.
Preparation Some experience with change and are trying to change. Planning to act within a month. Planning to change, and testing what works and doesn’t work.
Action Practicing new behavior for 3-6 months.
Maintenance Continued commitment to sustaining new behavior Post-6 months to 5 years.
